Who can join?
SENr registration is open to Dietitians, Nutritionists and Sport and Exercise Scientists.
The SENr is a competency based register and outlines the knowledge, skills and competences required to successfully practice as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist. It is anticipated that the majority of registrants will have a founding degree in dietetics or nutrition and will have undertaken further study in sport nutrition or sport and exercise science. Individuals with a founding degree in sport and exercise science will have undertaken appropriate further programmes of study in nutrition.
Registration is awarded to individuals who can demonstrate appropriate qualifications and proficiency gained after relevant professional experience.
The document, ‘Competences in Sport and Performance Nutrition’ details the competences required of registrants in Sport and Performance Nutrition.
Joining the SENr
How to Join
The Guide to Registration provides a complete overview of SENr registration.
Stage 1 – Self Assessment
All potential applicants are required to complete a ‘Self Assessment of Professional Competence’ prior to submitting an application.
The purpose of this self assessment is to ensure that only suitably qualified applicants proceed to apply for formal SENr assessment of competency.
If you do not meet all criteria including professional experience and application of skills (and can demonstrate this to be the case) do not submit an application for pre-assessment.
Stage 2 – Pre-Assessment
An application for pre-assessment can be made at any time throughout the year. There is no charge for pre-assessment.
- A Pre-assessment application should include:
- Completed pre-assessment application form.
- An up-to-date CV.
- A completed character reference form and a completed education reference form.
- Attested photocopies of relevant qualification certificates, and where possible, transcripts.
- Photocopy of Health Professions Council certificate of registration or a photocopy of a UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN) certificate or a photocopy of a British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences accreditation certificate.
- Certified translations of transcripts of courses of study and qualification certificates in languages other than English.
- Applicants who qualified in countries outwith the European Union will be required to submit an assessment of equivalence to an award from the United Kingdom by National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC).
- If English is not your first language, an English language proficiency test certificate.

Applicants who have applied for pre-assessment and have been informed that they are eligible for assessment can then submit their portfolio of evidence.
An assessment application should include:
- A completed assessment form and checklist.
- An application fee of £225.
- Three copies of a completed portfolio. Detailed guidelines on the submission of a portfolio of evidence are provided in Annexes A - E of the Guide to Registration and should be referred to during the preparation of the portfolio. The portfolio of evidence should clearly demonstrate the applicants ability to meet the professional competencies outlined in the Self Assessment of Competency framework. A portfolio of evidence in support of an application will only be accepted if it meets the prescribed format.
